The past few days gave us three birthdays in a row of some manly writers:
- Papa Hemingway on July 21
- The cowboy of despair, Cormac McCarthy, on July 22
- And my man Raymond Chandler yesterday, July 23
I think Chandler gets the honor of the quote today (from Farewell, My Lovely):
“I needed a drink, I needed a lot of life insurance, I needed a vacation, I needed a home in the country. What I had was a coat, a hat and a gun.”
