Leave A Job, Get A Job

Life is funny: I got on Doc’s insurance and thought I’d be doing freelance for the foreseeable future, and then a place I’d applied to when I was just thinking about doing all of that got back to me and, well, I start there on Monday.

They call themselves a “social change agency” which means that instead of trying to convince people to buy clients’ sandwiches or mortgage services or video games, I’ll be trying to convince people to stop smoking or tell them about resources like food benefits. In other words…meaningful work (!) but still in an agency environment.

I’m really excited, honestly. Freelance life was great for going on afternoon hikes but the sporadic paychecks were rough. And this seems like a genuinely good company. And since I can’t be Toby, it sounds like a pretty good compromise.

“Buy My Stuff!”

It was beyond time for a better portfolio site, so I took some time the first few weeks of freelance and made one. I used Squarespace and it was astonishingly easy–cool templates, drag and drop design, mobile-ready, super simple to publish with a custom domain. (This is not an ad, I was just really impressed.)

Anyway, I have words on the internet about my work, so check it out if you need a freelance editor/writer/creative type: www.karen-kaminski.com. And no, I cannot think about selling things without thinking about the Precious Roy segment on the Sifly and Olly show from 1996:

“I’m Precious Roy! Buy my words!”

What Am I Doing?!

Reader, I’m doing it: I’m quitting my agency job of eight years. I’m getting on Doc’s insurance and going to try freelance for a little bit, then either keep that up or look for another gig. Who knows! I don’t have a plan after the “B” of the quit your job BLT!

If you’ve seen the memes I’ve been posting for the last six months I’m sure you’re not all that surprised; this feels long overdue (longer than six months, for sure). Here are some choice, choice memes I’ve been saving for this very day:

I even made a playlist, lol.

Finally, here’s some self promotion now that I’m going to be self-employed: Do you need a copywriter/ACD? Hit me up on my professional site! Do you need a Patagonia-style fleece? Message me on Instagram (or see the saved “custom fleece” highlight for more info)!

Tuesday Project Roundup: Thrifty AND Prepared, Just Like The 1940s

After all the knitting lately, I finally used my sewing machine again last week. I cleaned out the closet when I got my craft shelf and found some extra pillowcases, so I tried out the embroidery stitches on the Bernina:Something new to decorate with for free!

And I pulled out an unfinished project from a couple of years ago–this pencil skirt:(It’s finished but too dark today for a modeled shot, so here’s the pattern. Early 50s, I think?)

I had originally thought I would sew this to wear to the second job of Christmas 2007 but ran out of time, and by the second job of Christmas 2008 I had made more than enough dresses to wear. But while thinking of the job search these past two weeks, I realized that a plain black straight skirt would be all kinds of useful, so I finished it up.

It’s my interview skirt. I don’t have any interviews yet, but–in keeping with the 1940s theme here–I did it before and I can do it again.
