weekend report
Weekend Report: Bulbs
My parents came over yesterday to help me hang Christmas lights and plant hyacinth and tulip bulbs for spring. And when I say “help me.” I mean that this happened (not shown, Mom digging holes for bulbs):
But I put the bulbs in the holes, at least…
Dad did a wonderful job hanging the other bubs while we were planting. Just look at this in the front!
And THIS in the back! (There might have been a reenactment of this scene when Dad tested the lights for the first time.)
The Pergola of All My Hopes and Dreams just gets better with every season. Thanks, parents!
November Things
Decorative gourd season may be winding down, but what comes after it? Ornamental kale and gratuitous evergreen season!
…or in other words, I finally got some “cold weather planters” potted up this weekend. I’ve wanted to do it since I bought the house and now I finally did. (I have grand plans for more evergreens and Christmas lights, too. Just wait.)
I also got a hike in, and the mountains are feeling very November-y: All the leaves are off the trees and the upper part of Millcreek Canyon is now closed for the winter. Time to start carrying winter layers in the backpack, just in case.
One Of These Things Is Not Like The Other
Tuesday Weekend Roundup
After getting ready to start ALL the projects last week, I didn’t touch the sewing machine. Instead, I enjoyed the rest of summer (which is ending really soon, if you weren’t aware):
I went for an after-work hike Friday. There are a few wildfires burning in the state but they made the light really good:
I read on the deck and admired the cannas that are blooming:
And I started thinking about inside projects, like organizing the garage and cleaning the basement. And hanging up a new papier-mache swan’s head.
I’ve named the swan Xerxes. He might need a collection of hats.
Happy Grown-up Weekend
It was the kind of weekend that a 20-year-old would think is boring and sad, but we 30-plus-year-olds know they’ve got it wrong–weekends like this are some of the best there are.
Two yoga classes and one incredibly green smoothie:
Time to sit outside and read (and finish off that bag of kettle corn):
And lots of time with this handsome kitty:
Weekend Things
The birthday party was a big success. I made a trifle and my friend made a fantastic cake topper for it. Or rather, a trifle topper.
The home improvements went well, too (pending some more art for pictures of those). IKEA wins again with these $9.99 red frames.
And I got out on a longer hike, to the top of one of the peaks behind Red Butte. I don’t go there often because there aren’t any big trees, but there was a nice view over into Emigration Canyon.
And instead of trees, this mountain top had prickly pears.
Lake Country
I spent the weekend camping in the Uinta Mountains about four hours north of the city. It was a lovely break with like-minded friends and lots of lakes.
And calm lakes at sunset where you could see fish jump:
There were also wildflower meadows:
It was a good trip. When I bought a “real” sleeping bag and other camping gear last year, I was still seeing my outdoorsy boyfriend. After he moved, I was worried I’d only use my stuff in case of a zombie apocalypse. So it was nice to realize that I have all sorts of Outdoor Types in my circle of friends–and to spend an outdoorsy weekend with them.
Four Days Off
With four days off, I was able to watch fireworks with the nephew (he was not 100% on board with things blowing up)
..and the city I live in (it was a two-hike weekend)
And put in a new flowerbed against the foundation (with the help of my parents)
I was also able to sew a blouse, finish piecing the quilt top, cut out another tank top, finish an old sweater, clean the house, run errands, and stuff the back of the car with bark mulch, peat moss, and gravel. It’s a good thing I didn’t have FIVE days off–I probably would have been able to take over the world.
Good Weekend
I went up into Little Cottonwood with friends Saturday morning:
On Sunday, my family descended on my house like a Habitat for Humanity crew and dug and planted me a flowerbed around the deck in about two hours (thanks, family!):
Bet you thought that my patio couldn’t get more fabulous, right? Wrong!
And I watched the super-moonrise:
BONUS Sunday night conversation story:
I was talking to my best friend while watching said moonrooise and told him to go out and look at it. So he went outside and it wasn’t quite up yet at his house (I was looking at it from a second story window) and he asked, “Where is it? Is it in the east?”
And I said, “YES it’s in the east. It’s not the end times!”
