Hot on the heels of one finished project, here’s another:

I didn’t get a full length shot, but it’s a maxi dress (the Jamie Christina Mission Maxi that I’ve made twice before) and it was a total stunt dress: There’s a bachelorette party for my friend this weekend and it has a theme of “sexy French baking” (we’re going to learn how to make macarons–sexily, I guess). So I wanted something festive but not too dressy but also girly and “French”; once I saw this fabric my plan came together.

I’m always stunned at how fast it is to sew knit dresses, so I’ve ordered even more jersey in bright prints. Hopefully this creative streak will stick around.

This is in the running for my favorite thing I’ve made this year. Because not only is it a useful and cool maxi dress, the print looks like a cross between tie-dye and a scene that could be airbrushed on the side of someone’s van:

There were a few jokes between Doc and me about pattern placement and the Grand Tetons, but I think the overall effect is OK.

I really like the pattern placement on the shoulders, as you can see in this tricky behind-the-back mirror shot:
And you can just catch the (grainy) topstitching on the shoulder strap above, which I’m quite proud of. Yay knits! Yay mountains! Yay sewing!

I wasn’t joking when I said last month that all I want to wear are maxi dresses (with a jacket for work). When you’re in air conditioning all day but it’s 100 degrees out, they keep your legs from freezing but are much cooler than pants when you hit the pavement. Also, sewing knits is FAST. Here’s the latest version:

It’s a pattern from a small indie designer; all the sewing blogs were raving about the fit of it so I gave it a try. And they were right–I raised the neckline, but otherwise cut it to my measurements and it fit perfectly and went together really well. And quickly.

I like the back, too–I think it looks very “store bought” versus homemade:
